M.Sc. Stephan Segler

Stephan was born in Hamburg in 1987. He began studying chemistry in 2007, received his Bachelor of Science degree in October 2010 and his Master of Science in 2012. Currently he is working in the field of semiconducting polymers and organic electronics.

He moved with the Staubitz group to Bremen in 2015.



M.Sc. Birk Thiedemann

Birk was born in Rendsburg, Germany. In 2007 he started studying chemistry at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel. In 2010, he completed his bachelor thesis “synthesis and electronic character of diverse N-heterocyclic carbenes” in the Lüning group (CAU Kiel) and obtained his bachelor’s degree. In the context of his master thesis ("Synthesis of New N-Heterocyclic Nucleophiles for Chemoselective Cross-Coupling Reactions"), Birk joined our group in 2012 and is currently working on the synthesis of monomers for conducting polymers.

He moved with the Staubitz group to Bremen in 2015.



M.Sc. Sara Urrego Riveros

Sara Urrego Riveros was born in Bogotá, Colombia. She studied at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia for both her Chemistry Bachelor's and Master's degree (2005-2013). Her M. Sc. thesis was focussed on the synthesis of polythiophenes for use as donor materials in organic solar cells. She is currently working on the synthesis of new semiconductor polymers and their use in organic electronic devices.

She moved with the Staubitz group to Bremen in 2015.

Dr. Julian Linshöft

Born in Stade, Germany, Julian opted for the alternative civilian service after finishing school. He started to study chemistry in Kiel and spent some months in Nantes, France, as an ERASMUS student. In 2010 he joined our group and graduated with his diploma thesis. He continued his research as a PhD student on the topic of low-bandgap polymers, funded by a fellowship from the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU). In 2014, he completed his PhD.

Dr. Annika Heinrich

Annika was born in Eckernförde in 1987 and obtained her Abitur in 2006 at the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium in Heikendorf. Afterwards she started studying Chemistry at the CAU in Kiel. She joined the group for her diploma thesis “Development of Chemoselective Cross-Coupling Reactions”. As a PhD student, she was working on the synthesis of compounds for semiconducting polymers that can be used e.g. in organic solar cells or organic light emitting diodes. Her Ph. D. was funded by a fellowship of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU). After she finished her PhD in July 2015, she was working in the Staubitz group on postdoctoral projects.

Dr. Jan Strüben

Jan was born in Itzehoe, Germany. He graduated from school in 2004. Afterwards, he opted for the alternative civilian service at Wildpark Eekholt in Großenaspe. He started to study chemistry at the University of Kiel in 2005. For his diploma thesis, finished in 2010, he worked on new strategies for the synthesis of conducting polymers. For his Ph.D. thesis, he was developing new photoresponsive polymers for the usage as switchable adhesives. For his post-doctoral research, he was working on spiropyran based mechanophoric polymers and surfaces. He was funded by the SFB 677 – Function by Switching.

M. Sc. Sebastian Beil

Sebastian was born in Kiel, Germany. He has been studying chemistry at the Christian Albrechts University Kiel since 2010. In 2013 he worked on a three-month project on the “design and syntheses of unsymmetrical diaryliodonium salts for novel polymerization reaction” in the group of Prof. Dr. Berit Olofsson at Stockholm University. He was working in the Staubitz group on his final M. Sc. project on the syntheses of dinucleophiles of different heteroarenes for chemoselective cross-coupling reactions.

Nils Lüdecke

Nils was born in Marburg in 1986 and obtained his Abitur in 2007 at the Elisabeth Gymnasium in Marburg. After graduating from school he was drafted for compulsory military service. He started studying chemistry at the CAU in Kiel and completed his bachelor thesis about six membered, axial chiral, concave NHC, in the Lüning group at CAU Kiel. He was working on azaborines during his M. Sc. thesis.

David Presa

David was born in Gijón (Spain). He studied chemistry at the University of Oviedo where he received a Master’s degree. He then started his Ph.D. research at the University of Oviedo making hybrid block copolymers for self-assembly. He was a guest Ph. D. student for two months in the Staubitz group in 2014 and worked on switchable polysiloxanes with Jan Strüben. He joined our group for another two months in 2015.

Holly Kuenzi

Holly was born in Silverton, Oregon. She is currently studying at the University of Oregon, in Eugene, Oregon, and in June 2016, will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She received a scholarship from the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 677 to conduct research at CAU in Kiel, Germany. In the Staubitz group, she was working with Mathias Schulz on incorporation of dyes into polymers.

Brittany Trang

Brittany is from Peoria, Illinois. She studies chemistry and English at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and will graduate in May 2017. At Ohio State, she develops organic materials for energy in Dr. Yiying Wu's group. During her DAAD RISE internship with the Staubitz group in summer 2015, she was working on synthesizing spiropyran-containing functional polymers with Mathias Schulz.

Louise Dölger

Louise was born in Bonn and obtained her Abitur at the German School London in 2011. She then began her chemistry and business administration studies at the Christian-Albrechts University Kiel and joined the Staubitz group in January 2015. Her bachelor thesis was on the subject of semiconducting polymers.

Dr. Luying He

Luying was born in Sichuan, China. She received her bachelor degree at the Southwest University (SWU) in China in 2008. Then she studied at the South China University of Technology (SCUT) for master degree. After 2 years, she started her Ph.D. studies as a combination of master and doctor degree. In 2011, she joined our group and was working on the synthesis of new semiconducting polymers.

Yannik Appiarius

Yannik was born in Cuxhaven in 1991 and obtained his Abitur in 2011 at the Lichtenberg Gymnasium Cuxhaven. He started studying business chemistry at the CAU Kiel in the same year and joined the Staubitz group in October 2014. For his bachelor thesis, he was working on pyrenes for the application in organic electronics.

Dr. Jörn Schmidt-Lassen

Jörn studied Chemistry at the CAU Kiel. In the Lindhorst group he studied glycolipids in micellar systems for his diploma and Ph.D. thesis, which he completed in 2013. In 2014, he joined the Staubitz group working on switchable polymers containing mechanophoric dyes in the framework of the special research area SFB 677 “Function by Switching” in collaboration with the Adelung group at the Technical Faculty of the University of Kiel.



Ashley A. Kim

Ashley was born in New Jersey, and in 2014, she was heading into her final year at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, for a Bachelor of Arts and Honors in Chemistry. She received a joint scholarship from the ACS IREU and DAAD RISE programs to conduct research at CAU in Kiel, Germany. She was working with Mathias Schulz of the Staubitz group on the synthesis of mechanophoric spiropyran-containing polythiophene polymers.

Clemens Bender

Clemens was born in Regensburg in 1990. He obtained his International Baccalaureate in 2009 at the European school in Uccle, Belgium. In 2010 he started studying chemistry at the CAU in Kiel and was working on his bachelor thesis in the Staubitz group.

Colin Gould

Colin was born in Washington, Pennsylvania and is currently going into his third year as a student at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. At Brown, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and works in the group of Dr. David Cane. He was working with the Staubitz group between semesters as a DAAD RISE Scholar. Colin worked with Jan on the development of photoswitchable polymers for application in switchable adhesives.



Patrick Sarver

Patrick was born in Mineola, New York. He is currently studying chemistry at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and will graduate in May 2014. At Wesleyan, he works in the lab of Professor Michael Calter, investigating methods for asymmetric synthesis. In Kiel, he was working with Matti Schulz on the incorporation of mechanophores into polymers. He was funded by the DAAD RISE program.

Julia Hain

Julia was born in Hamburg in 1990. She obtained her Abitur in 2009 in Schenefeld in Schleswig-Holstein on the outskirts of Hamburg. In the same year she started studying Chemistry at the CAU in Kiel and was working on her bachelor project in 2012.

Mischa Baier

Mischa was born in Unna in Nordrhein-Westfalia, where he obtained his Abitur in 2007. He did his military service as a reserve officer candidate in the German navy. His present rank is “Leutnant zur See d.R.”. In 2009, he started studying business chemistry at the Christiana Albertina University Kiel, where he was working on his bachelor thesis in 2012.

Elisabeth Erbes

Elisabeth was born in Issyk, a small city in Kasachstan, in 1987. When she was two and a half years old she moved with her family to Germany and obtained her Abitur in 2008 at the Cäcilienschule in Oldenburg (Niedersachsen). In the same year she started to study chemistry at the University of Kiel. In July 2012 she joined the group of Professor Staubitz to work on her Bachelor project.

Evan Baum

Born in Massachusetts, Evan came from the United States to CAU on a three-month internship through the DAAD RISE program in summer 2012. He worked with Julian Linshöft studying heteroaromatic monomers to make low band-gap polymers. Evan studies organic and biochemistry at Wesleyan University as a member of the class of 2013. His future aspirations include enrolling in a Ph. D. program in organic chemistry.

Jennifer Paasch

Jenny was born in Kiel in 1987. She obtained her Abitur at “Käthe-Kollwitz-Schule” in Kiel in 2006. Afterwards she started her studies of business combined with chemistry at the CAU, where she was also learning Swedish. She was working on novel metal containing conducting polymers.

Nicole vom Stein

Nicole was born in Cologne and obtained her Abitur at “Albrecht-Dürer-Gymnasium” in Hagen in 2006. After six month of travelling and working in Australia, she started studying business combined with chemistry in Kiel. She was working on novel metal containing conducting polymers.
